State Farm® partners with Goodwill to support financial literacy classes

DENVER, Colo. – The State Farm Foundation has awarded Goodwill Industries of Denver a Good Neighbor Citizenship™ grant for more than $8,000 to support unemployed and underemployed Coloradans via financial literacy classes at its Career Connection Centers in metro Denver.

Goodwill Career Connection Centers offer free career development resources—such as resume and cover letter writing workshops, job search help and mock interviews—to struggling individuals with barriers to employment. The added Goodwill Financial Literacy classes will teach adults how to increase their savings whether or not they have a stable income. The curriculum includes sessions on how to develop a saving strategy, budgeting, credit reports and understanding credit and debt theft. The course will also explain the costs of common money management practices chosen by low-income families such as using check cashing shops, payday loans and making purchases in installments.

“As a workforce development agency, our main goal is to get individuals with barriers the resources they need to find consistent employment. It’s also our responsibility to make sure these individuals are set up for success once they do get hired and begin living on a consistent income,” said President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Denver Stuart Davie. “The support from State Farm and the financial literacy curriculum makes that possible by putting our participants on a path to financial stability.”

“I’ve had the pleasure of volunteering with Goodwill since 2007, and have seen firsthand how the Career Connection Centers have benefitted the community,” says Jared Maestas, a State Farm employee in Greeley and Young Professionals Goodwill Advisory Committee member. “I’ve found my passion through volunteering for Goodwill, inspiring others to achieve their goals and dreams. I’m proud to work for a company which fosters an environment of volunteerism and philanthropic giving.”

The Goodwill Financial Literary classes will be offered at following Goodwill Career Connection Centers: Iliff, Stapleton, Tower and Lakeside. Please click here for addresses and class times.
